outside the box. Personally, I've never liked the hydraulic fluid, lines,
master cylinders, bleeding, and all that mess. However, there is no denying
the beauty of disk brakes. So, how about mechanical disk brakes? These
have been successfully used on many Pietenpols and are basically go-cart
brakes ("Comet" or similar). Cable actuated. Search Google on go-kart
brakes and you'll find several different ones.
Most of them use a cable-pull lever to actuate a cam that wedges the pads
against the disk. You could go ala Ken Rand and use a cable that you reach
down and grab with your hand (yeah, right), or fabricate heel pedals or toe
pedals to apply the cable tension. If you were a Tri-Pacer fan you might
even install a "Johnson Bar" handle that you grab and pull to apply both
brakes, but you get no differential braking action with it.
