Bill, I have used AutoCAD before and always found it clunky and difficult to use. I recently bought Alibre Design and have been very happy with it. I really like its ACIS model (parameteric design). 3D modelling is very easy. They have a free version called Alibre Xpress. It retains pretty much all function of their lowest end package but has a limitation on how many parts you can use to make an assembly. Depending on how complicated of KR mods you want to do, even the free version might suffice. Download it and try it.
Once you download it, they will periodically bug you with sales calls. Nothing too serious or obnoxious, they seem to be a nice bunch. There is a design competition with Alibre Xpress that if you win, you get a full version license. I wasn't planning on buying it, but I ended up liking it too much and the sales guy gave me 50% off. I thought it was worth it. Good luck!
