I was walking by one of Great Plains' seminars at Oshkosh this year and
stopped there for a little bit while Steve was talking about that very
thing.  He said that was a problem on high compression VW engines and gave
an example of someone that swallowed a valve in flight.  IIRC it had
something to do with the valves stretching on the higher compression
engines.  If you have to keep loosening yor valve adjustment you have a
problem that you need to fix.

On m VW some of the valves required minor adjustment during an oil change,
but usually most of them checked O.K.
