I was walking by one of Great Plains' seminars at Oshkosh this year and stopped there for a little bit while Steve was talking about that very thing. He said that was a problem on high compression VW engines and gave an example of someone that swallowed a valve in flight. IIRC it had something to do with the valves stretching on the higher compression engines. If you have to keep loosening yor valve adjustment you have a problem that you need to fix.
On m VW some of the valves required minor adjustment during an oil change, but usually most of them checked O.K.
