Right in my backyard (Newberry Springs, just east of Barstow) and I'd forgotten about it. A week after this KR crash those desert winter winds brought down a Cessna Silver Eagle (P-210 with a turbine engine) going between SoCal and Las Vegas. Mom pilot and two daughters. Mom lost control of the plane - really vicious turbulence and is probably why the KR pilot went as high as 14K - trying to get above the turbulence and perhaps icy clouds. Winter storms were going through. It was one of these winter storms that brought down Ken Rand coincidentally. The following is from the AOPA forums, "We went to Havasu on Sunday is spite of (his wife) saying she thought it would be too difficult driving there because of the weather. Driving the I-15 from the I-210 to Barstow was really fun trying to miss all the tumbleweed going across the highway. In fact the CHP had to temporarily close the I-15 around Hesperia as there was hazardous stuff crossing the road and causing accidents. Going into Barstow McDonalds (our favorite retirement diner) I commented about some clouds North and East of Barstow looking so menacing, just like in Alaska. We went into the McDonalds??? parking lot at 12:35. Monday???s WJS said a C-210 crashed at 12:40 2.5 miles East of the Barstow-Daggett airport. Normally I have (wife) drive from Barstow to Needles, but because of the wind I didn???t let her drive. A guy at the airport reported seeing a plane spiraling out of the clouds at 12:40. March 7th an experimental aircraft fell out of the sky not far from this latest crash. There must be some bad stuff in this area. It seems reasonable to watch out for falling debris in this area.
