I remember the absolutely wonderful feeling I felt when I was doing data
entry and discovered I could listen to books on tape while I did data entry.
It felt then like my employer was only renting a very small bit of me --
from my eyes to my fingers -- but I had a whole lot of freedom of the mind.
(I also did time myself and I was actually faster and more accurate listing
to books on tape and tapes of comedy radio shows. I realize that some
people can't do that.)
I have real trouble with this no-surfing-on-company time attitude too. I
also surf at home on subjects that sometimes yield very valuable information
at work. And sometimes my off-topic surfing becomes on-topic quickly. It
is part of my self-training. Of course, that could have to do with my set
of interests...
