Standards are the straitjacket of innovation!!!!!
A monologue from a biased tech.
A historical perspective,"slightly slanted".
In 1934 the FCC set standards for am radio and other communication mediums.
In 2000 am radio is not significantly different (technically),quality of
product ??.
The National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) was established.
The only innovation was color tv "YEEECCCHHH".
After 60 years we will have HDTV "Standards", well maybe.
FM radio ??? well.................
Video Recorder Standards VHS,SuperVHS and Beta. (Blockbuster and Hollywood
video
money makers).
Computers:
Motherboards still being made with ISA slots.
Hard drives Super humongous size and speed (rotation) choked at 8 and 16
bit
connections "Standard". 32 coming out.
The major Personal Computer operating system, MSDOS, crippled by the
standard of
backward compatability from 1980 to 1998.
Unix Standards <grin>
Much to the dismay of IBM and Sun Unix remains a family of operating
systems
which gives it the ability to innovate unlike Redmonds NiceTry.
Lessons Forgot.
PC means "Personal" Computer.
The PC became wildly popular not because of IBM or Intel or
Microsoft.
It was from the words " I don't have to wait for #@*** IT to give me
time.
If the Linux community forgets this lesson and doesn't apply it
today????
Some personal history.
1959: Burned fingers and more soldering 4000 diodes to a magnetic core
matrix
for a computer memory that didn't work.
1976: Wrote 11 programs in assembly for CP/M Z80. Sold 1.
1980: Started repairing and debugging IBM's and Gates stuff.
1983: Started consumer electronic servicing business.
1999: Retired at last!
JoAnne Abbott C.E.T.
To meditate on;
Life is a Process
Steelmaking is a Process
The two are equivalent.
