How about libraries? In my capacity as a non-professional pusher of books <g>
I've (attempted to) read latest Booker Prize nominees, crawled under
PC workstations to re-establish connection with the main server,
managed accounts with stationers, taught dear old ladies how to use
photocopiers and providing recommendations on poetry and self-help guides to
Micro$oft NT. Professional librarians can find themselves cataloguing
modern Hebrew literature, implementing web interfaces to databases and
lobbying politicians on censorship issues, all in a day's work.
It can be quite an interesting line of work. (Though on days when the
high point of intellectual enquiry is something like, 'how do I set up my
Hotmail account?', and all you do is chase kids who are trying to sneak
books out the door, you can almost see where our quiet and boring
stereotypes come from.)
