5) Be understanding of illness, both the person's own and their family's.
Take the time to explore solutions - your best programmer's son has just
been diagnosed with leukemia? Keep him/her in the company by handing
him/her a laptop and a modem and saying 'come in when there's meetings we
need you for, but otherwise here's a timesheet....'
And schedule those meetings around doctor's appointments where possible.

Learn the reasons women leave jobs, and effectively negate them, and gee,
how much retraining money would be saved?
