Ok, but how does this compare with the (hypothetical) forty-year-old woman
just getting back into the workforce after raising her kids, trying to learn
Linux, and sighing at the assorted evidences that no, the world isn't any
more accepting of women in technical fields.
She's not expecting the right to always feel good about everything she does,
but given the choice between a field where she can just fit in, and a field
where she sees the signs of non-acceptance of women.. why should she pick
the one which promises to be harder?
Whether she is /correct/ about non-acceptance of women is irrelevent. If the
signs and icons which /her experience in the past/ has associated with non-
acceptance are present, she can quite legitimately assume that they mean the
same now as they did then.
