Because it affects end users, both mappers and players.

I can argue about how ioquake3 does the Right Thing until I see blue
in the face but all the user sees is a map that works with stock Q3
and doesn't with ioquake3. It makes people say things like "yeah, I
tried ioq3 once but it was buggy" and you can't even really blame them
for it.

Besides, it was my patch five years ago that introduced this
behaviour. There is professional honour at stake here.
