Because it affects end users, both mappers and players. I can argue about how ioquake3 does the Right Thing until I see blue in the face but all the user sees is a map that works with stock Q3 and doesn't with ioquake3. It makes people say things like "yeah, I tried ioq3 once but it was buggy" and you can't even really blame them for it. Besides, it was my patch five years ago that introduced this behaviour.
