Consider these scenarios. > 1) You type your project report, resume etc.. on any GNU/Linux > wordprocessor and save in the .kword, abiword etc... format. > You can only print it on a computer having GNU/Linux machine. you > cannot print it on a windows machine. Why not use Open-Office for now until everyone decides that source language for Formatted Text and Presentation documents is XML. Or use any standard Wordprocessor and save as RTF(Rich Text Format). > 2) How many places you know have a GNU/Linux machine for printing > GNU/Linux documents? Abiword is cross-platform and most of the Cyber Cafes have only Abiword, Star-Office or Open-Office. I had a real hard time getting to print an MS Word 2000 format .doc resume I got from a friend. > 3) How many companies accept resumes in GNU/Linux format? Convert to RTF or HTML, Plaintext, PDF ( Its lighter than .doc), Not many would refuse. Infact many of them explicitly forbid .doc (virus threat) > 4) Although you might convert the documents created in GNU/Linux to > Word .doc format for printing. Is it really worth installing GNU/Linux > office packages to do just that? You might really need to convert from .doc to .abw if you are to print anywhere anytime in ubiquitous Cyber-Cafes. > What is the alternatives? > I would recommend PDF or PostScript as it is a format made to be OS > independent and used widely for commercial printing. > > The reality of the situation is that many companies are unwilling to > give up M$ word. I have seen several MNC asking that resumes be > submitted only in MS word or ASCII text formats. So use ASCII text.(They are not so dumb as to open these in notepad) > just my 2 cents. :-) Just my Rs. 2 .
