You are exactly right, the thing is that actually Linux is still not
ready for the desktop and it would take some amount of more time to be
adopted as a Desktop OS.

The present strengths of Linux does not lie in Desktop OS, Unix from the
very beginning was used for High-End applications/Servers/Clusters etc.
So Linux is best suited where you need performance, security. stability,
and reliability. Enterprises/Corporates/Universities etc. adopted Linux
due to these strength only. Linux would be the no 1 shipped server by
the year 2004 on Intel Platforms.
