Yes, common man's tamil varies a lot! But pure tamil is not common man's tamil! What the lankans speak is their own modification of pure tamil. Same goes with malayalam, telugu and kannadam, which are all, to varying degrees, derived from pure tamil and other old languages such as sanskrit.
