Neil and Nick: Many thanks for your replies. I will try to absorb them over the coming days. But a few initial comments: Neil, you say "For small sites, don't even bother with cf_promises_validated." But the only place it seems to be mentioned is in "failsafe.cf". But "failsafe.cf" is critical to the self-recovery of cfengine after various failures. It somehow feels wrong and scary that mere mortal ordinary end-users such as me should be going anywhere near its insides. Is "failsafe.cf" clearly documented anywhere? An end-user with a central hub and many clients could get themselves into a lot of trouble if they make a mistake in "failsafe.cf", couldn't they? Shouldn't we regard it with a "Beware! Here be dragons" mindset? And so not touch it at all? Nick: you mention "policy_server.dat". Is this documented at all in the cfengine manual? I don't see it. That said, in my particular case I've found the file, and I think I've now got a clearer picture what might be going on in our machine cluster. Can I simply adjust the file's contents (and perhaps restart cfengine on such machines)? Or do I need to re-bootstrap? (What list of actions does bootstrap perform? Again, the documentation seems sparse.) By the way, in my comments about the contents of "cf_promises_validated" (timezone; lack of newline) I forgot to mention that I had already put them into the bugtracker. That was six weeks ago, so they are in the old bugtracker: 1286, 1287; also 1285 is related. _______________________________________________ Help-cfengine mailing list Help-cfengine@cfengine.org https://cfengine.org/mailman/listinfo/help-cfengine
