Bruce,

Derek's response may not have been copied to the list.  At least I did not
see it.

I suspect that he responded that you may have your data file saved in one
of the database formats and your version of GnuCash was not bundled with
the proper database setup to open that type of file.  I do not use that
format so I don't know how to address that situation but others here may be
able to help.
