You don't need to save as a new name. The fact that there was a LCK file with the new name implies that you have the version with the bug that didn't fully shut down GnuCash when one does File->Quit. What version of GnuCash are you running? If you are not at 5.8 or 5.9, I strongly recommend updating your version. After you shut down GnuCash, does the Task Manager still show a GnuCash process running? If it does, you definitely have that bug, and that is the cause of the LCK file issue.
If GnuCash disappears, then it is probably crashing, and it is leaving the lockfile. It is safe to Open Anyway in these cases.
