Unfortunately, the hdc=cdrom fix didn't work for me.
Well, actually it worked on one machine but not another.
With the one that didn't work I opened the box and switched
it to be a slave and tried to install again.
I got the same error.
With all the inconstistent results I am getting, I think it is a
hardware problem. All the machines have the same model CD-ROM,
but I think it is "no-name" brand. (I didn't think to look when
I had the box open.) Linux recognizes it as model LTN526S, but
that's all I can tell.
Anyway, I finally figured out how to do a NFS install, so it is no
longer a big worry.
