I'm having the same problem.. your solution doesn't work.. it just fixed hdb back to empty.   i've tried plugging the cdrom in as slave and master.
 
i'm totally befustered.   it's a duron600, FIC board.   it stop while playing with a ramdisk.  what could possibly be wrong there?
