Please keep in mind, I'm not a Tesla owner. As I understand it, on Teslas built
before October 2020 the charging ECU (electronic control unit) is not
compatible with the CCS protocol. Apparently, a replacement unit is required. I
suspect this is something you could easily verify with Tesla if you wanted to,
but your 2021 should be fine. As you suspected the system is backwards
compatible, newer Tesla can use both protocols, but the older ones can't do CCS
without the upgrade. This is the same limitation that impacts the adapters to
allow Teslas to charge from CCS stations.

As for the 2020 Bolt, some 2019-2020 Bolts require a software update, outlined
in service bulletin #24-NA-200. I have a 2020 too and I just called the dealer
and asked if a software update was shown for my VIN. They said there is none
shown. That and the lack of an email from GM leaves me fairly comfortable with
trying an adapter. I don't have one yet, I ordered the GM one and it is on
backorder.

The adapters only work on V3 and V4 SuperChargers (most V4s are MagicDock
equipped so no adapter is actually needed). PlugShare does show the ones where
adapters work versus the older ones that are Tesla only. The Tesla app also
only shows adapter friendly ones. Folks that have been charging using the
adapters are reporting the Tesla app is more reliable than using the Chevy app.

Thanks EVtinker,

I have a 2021 Tesla-Y, is that considered "old" or "new"-CCS? When was the
transition; it should be backwards compatible (like most things that are
engineered properly - think B&W TV's to Color TV's etc.)

Since I have a 2020 Chevy Bolt, how would I know what Tesla superchargers I
could use with an adapter?

Have a renewable energy day,

Tesla switched to the CCS communication protocol due to European requirements.
Newer Teslas sold in the US speak CCS but use the NACS connector. Older Teslas
need a hardware upgrade to use newer Tesla superchargers. CCS cars, even with
an adapter, cannot use older Tesla superchargers as those don't use CCS
protocols.

Subject: [EVDL] Ccs to J3400(Nacs) Tesla adapters communication protocol

Hi Folks
Isn’t a Tesla communication protocol adapter needed to operate your non-Tesla
EV (like my Bolt) with the HVDC CCS to J3400(Nacs) physical adapter ? I don’t
see how the adapter would work without a GM agreement with Tesla to translate
the data to GMs CCS fast charging protocol.

Similarly I bought a few years ago a ChadeMo adapter ($400 from Tesla) that
never worked well due to the incompatible data transfer to Electrify America
fast chargers. The few times I tried it, I had to call Electrify America 800
number and have the technician remotely close the HV charge contactor to
initiate charging.
Best regards Mark
