Thanks Phil,

Sounds like it would be "iffy" at best to plug my 2020 Chevy Bolt into Tesla
Superchargers with a Levitron etc adapter.

It would be nice to get all EV's universally fast charging but the big-3 never
invested in fast chargers (except for intermittently maintained VW-Electrify
America) - still seems like if you want to take long trips in an EV, Tesla is
still the best choice.

Have a renewable energy day,

Mark

All V3 and V4 superchargers (you can tell because they have 4 pedestals per
cabinet, so labelled #A-#D), have CCS (PLC) modems and are capable of charging
any CCS vehicle Tesla decides to allow with a simple mechanical (no
electronics) adapter.

V1 and V2 superchargers only speak Tesla's proprietary Single-Wire CAN
protocol, and Tesla will not release this for other makes, though it is
possible to upgrade these by replacing the electronics in the pedestal to
include a PLC modem, but I have not seen this "in the wild" yet.

Tesla so far has used Plug-N-Charge certificates to restrict CCS charging for
3rd parties, but word is that some GM cars will not support this, so I don't
know if they will open it up for these cars or not.

Tesla switched to the CCS communication protocol due to European requirements.
Newer Teslas sold in the US speak CCS but use the NACS connector. Older Teslas
need a hardware upgrade to use newer Tesla superchargers. CCS cars, even with
an adapter, cannot use older Tesla superchargers as those don't use CCS
protocols.

Subject: [EVDL] Ccs to J3400(Nacs) Tesla adapters communication protocol

Hi Folks
Isn’t a Tesla communication protocol adapter needed to operate your non-Tesla
EV (like my Bolt) with the HVDC CCS to J3400(Nacs) physical adapter ? I don’t
see how the adapter would work without a GM agreement with Tesla to translate
the data to GMs CCS fast charging protocol.

Similarly I bought a few years ago a ChadeMo adapter ($400 from Tesla) that
never worked well due to the incompatible data transfer to Electrify America
fast chargers. The few times I tried it, I had to call Electrify America 800
number and have the technician remotely close the HV charge contactor to
initiate charging.
Best regards Mark
