Yep, it seems to me that the development of the ICE parallels that of the
phonograph.

You young whippersnappers weren't there, but I heard how vinyl record
playing changed from 1950 tech (I was born a little after that) to 1980
tech. The improvement in sound over those 30 years was jaw-dropping. The
engineers did amazing things.

I wouldn't quite say progress stopped there, but ... let's just say that
today's high end vinyl gear costs 10, 15, 20 times what the high end cost
back then even after adjusting for inflation. But is it 10 times as good?
No. Not even twice as good. Maybe ... 20% better?

So it is with ICEs. Between about 1960 and perhaps 2005 or 2010, automotive
engineers cleaned up ICEs about as much as audio engineers cleaned up vinyl
playing from 1950 to 1980. We're talking no emissions control at all in
1960, PCV in '61/'63, finally getting to modern microprocessor control and
hybrid drivetrains.

I'm no automotive engineer, but like Peri, I don't see room for much more
ICE tweaking.

And, again, all of what I wrote about before applies. Even if Toyota or
Subaru or Mazda really *can* squeeze more efficiency out of ICEs, that
doesn't do anything to clean up the rest of the ICEV support system, from
wellhead to gas tank.

But EVs *do*.

To me, just as digital audio was the way forward in 1980, EVs are the way
forward in 2024.
