You're talking about what the automakers have demanded since at least the
1990s. Don't force us to make EVs. Just give us a chance to make the same
old ICE technology cleaner!

Well, we did, and we got "Dieselgate."

"Tell us the destination, not the route" - that sounds reasonable. The
problem is that most of the automakers aren't - reasonable, I mean.

Besides, it's not just the tailpipe. The whole ICEV support system is
filthy, oiled up, carbonized. Think about petroleum extraction, refining,
trucking the finished fuel, powering the filling stations. Think about oil
changes, exhaust systems, wear parts that ICEVs need replaced but EVs don't.
The ICEV support system belches out CO2, other greenhouse gases, and all
kinds of pollutants - some unregulated, some unknown - from the wellhead to
the tailpipe.

I'm not taking that bait either :-), but even if you don't buy CO2's part in
global warming, the rising percentage of atmospheric CO2 - a known fact -
has other effects. We're messing around with Mother Nature's spec sheet.

Example: have you noticed how much faster weeds grow these days? Where I
used to live in Ohio, the poison ivy grew faster and bigger every year.
That's both higher average temperatures and rising CO2 percentage.

EVs are fundamentally better because they're much more efficient than ICEVs.
Even if the powerplant feeding them burns gas or coal, they're *still*
cleaner.

EVs are also fuel-flexible. If your local powerplant uses fossil fuel, well,
fine, don't use that electricity in your EV. Bolt PV on your roof instead,
assuming you can afford it.

Even if you don't add PV, as coal powerplants go offline and get replaced by
renewables, your driving gets cleaner without any effort on your part - IF
you're driving an EV.

OTOH, if you have an ICEV, it burns what it burns. It's kind of tough to
make gasoline with panels on your roof. And as it ages, it gets dirtier,
not cleaner.
