Interesting thoughts, Willie. Renault builds their EVs and ICEVs for Europe. They have ample manufacturing capacity for Europe. They no longer sell in the US and may never again.
Neither does Peugeot, Citroen, or Opel. For that matter, GM doesn't sell in Europe. All have good reasons for their market restrictions, but they're not relevant to my main point. EVs have a more secure future in Europe than in the USA. And even though the EU automakers (as in the US) push their expensive, high- profit big vehicles, surprise! For very good reasons, Europeans still buy a heck of a lot of small, inexpensive, efficient, manuverable cars. An EV maker that wants to convert these folks to EV drivers needs to offer the vehicles they need and want. Tesla still doesn't. They talk about it now and then, but what are they actually on about? A weird-looking pickup truck. If Tesla truly wants to put butts in EV seats where EVs are welcomed, not just in California, they need to offer EVs to suit the needs and budgets of people other than the upper middle class and beyond. They certainly can choose to stay focused on big, expensive cars, leaving affordable EVs to the traditional EU automakers and to the Chinese That's a valid business decision. (It also smells a lot like GM, Ford, and Chrysler in the 1960s, but I digress.) I guess that greenwashing their "brand" with lofty mission claims is also a commercial decision. But if Musk ever really meant that he was on some kind of pure-hearted "save the Earth" mission, for the present, either that claim is just advertising, or he's fooling himself.
