Gage and Eberhard / Tesla didn't invent the idea of using massive numbers of laptop cells. I'm not so sure anyone did, as the concept of parallel lithium cells could probably be called prior art, though hardly on such a scale. However, Alan Cocconi *may* have been the first to apply it to an EV. Again, it was the T-zero. He used 6,800 (!) 18650 cells in 2003. At the time, I didn't think it could be practical for production, because of the massive number of potential failure points.
