I don't have to imagine it.  That's essentially the same model used by 
inkjet printer manufacturers.  

They sell the printers at or even below cost, and expect to make it up on 
the ink.  They'll now even sell you a "subscription" to supply ink at 
regular intervals for a slightly lower cost.

That's why we have aftermarket ink refillers.  

The printer manufacturers have responded with ever more complex ways to make 
refilling difficult.  Nearly every new printer model gets a new (and usually 
smaller) cartridge design, so the manufacturer can be the exclusive ink 
supplier for a year or so, until the refillers catch up.  

Now even that's not good enough for the printer makers, and we're at the 
point where a frugal printer owner will isolate the machine from the 
internet, so the manufacturer can't download new anti-refill firmware to it.

In effect the printer makers have declared war on not only refillers, but 
also owners who buy refilled ink cartridges.

I don't see that as an EV ownership model I'd be interested in, but maybe 
I'm missing something.
