Henry Ford once sought to set up his own gas station chain, but was
blocked by the government due to its potential for monopoly (i.e. you
could only buy fuel for Fords at Ford gas stations). Ford is reputed to
have said, "If I can sell gasoline, I could *give* the cars away."
I occurs to me that now only Tesla has the faintest hope of "cornering
the charging market". Then sell cars cheap and make profit by selling
charging. Of course that would be a 180 deg about face since they have
been making a profit on car sales and essentially selling charging at
low mark up.
Following the reasoning: now legacy makers make minimal profit on new
car sales and stick it to buyers for needed and predictable repair.
Again, just the opposite of Tesla strategy.
