For EDIFACT if you use the tag+qualifier combination to select desired instances from individual repetitions then you do not end up with ' holes' in your target record unless that data is missing from the EDI. For cases where groups, although not infinitely repeatable, can have a widely varying number of repetitions and each instance is not uniquely defined (such as at detail level) then you would get holes; since your target record must have defined positions to accommodate data from the maximum number of repetitions, which is why when mapping to a spreadsheet you normally have one record per detail line and replicate the header information on each line.
