You sound like a nice person. But seriously, the point is that a small group of free software acolytes are that club; perhaps some of them are on this list.
Consider, by analogy, the citizen science movement; it has very few spokespeople, and very many groups facilitating involvement among curious minds. I’ve yet to see anything anywhere in free software gatherings (except in Cuba) approaching that kind of inclusive space with nice people. Instead it’s almost all been gatekeeping by “smart jerks” and the like who would prefer to huddle with their existing friends. Which is fine, I suppose, for a club, but a failure for a movement. And that’s completely and entirely besides the point that corporate conferences are better organized. Don’t get distracted by that point. As a PS- I think a few hacker spaces have also been an exception to the rule, but those were not explicitly focused on free software, they are invariably committed to liberation from larger social structural nonsense, like police spying on non-white neighbors with ineffectual and biased tech systems.
