I use a Motorola Canopy over 15 nautical miles of water, happily.  Work good, 
last long time, once you get it aimed just right (I think this was about 
Fresnel 
zones and height above the water).  When first installed, it was spotty when 
the 
lake was calm, better with a light chop.  The EE-level explanation is left as 
an 
exercise to the reader. :-)
