The last few WiFi USB units I bought were $15 each.  You could build a 
proof of concept very cheaply and easily.

The cheap choice is to go to Goodwill and pick up a couple of old WRT-54 
units and install dd-wrt.  That wouldn't give you 802.11n, but it is 
cheap.  Given that I value my time a little more, I would probably go for 
a unit with a faster CPU, more memory and gigabit ethernet.  Hook up a 
gain antenna, install dd-wrt and you should be ready to go.

Again, these are _cheap_ solutions that may be completely acceptable in 
your application.
