It doesn't happen on any other machine I have and it didn't happen on Raspbian until a year or two ago.

I think it is your windowmanager messing around with focus for some reason. If the main window looses focus, the menu gets blended away. I see your titlebar changing color. It may be also an interaction with the WM and other things like the top bar. Why this is happening, a mystery, I don't know. Could you try changing the WM, e.g to windowmaker ? Or you could try exporitng the display to another system where GNUstep is running properly and see what happens there. Riccardo
