Yes. I've been suffering from a Discourse instance (in another context). I tried to participate via email and it does treat email clearly as a second-rate citizen. It clearly tries to nudge you into its Web "UI". Luckily in my case, the forum degenerated into a write-only medium (fora sometimes have this tendency) and it was discontinued.
