At least the discourse instance at discuss.python.org allows to reply through email. I have not tried to start new topics. Unfortunately it is unable to handle interleaving email quoting style. Lines started from ">" are stripped. It is necessary to use discourse-specific markup.
Communication style may be quite different, more synchronous and with short message. It may be inconvenient with traditional mail user agents.
