Hi team,
Daniel I are at the MiniDebConf in Toulouse and we were talking about
our sprint pre-next release. We listed some things that would be good to
have for Trixie release:
- *Ruby 3.3*: this is going to happen anyway. I did it in Ubuntu
already, and once I get back home I will have some time to push this
forward in Debian.
- *Rails 7*: this is something for us to consider. We have rails 6 for a
while, and rails 7 was released basically 3 years ago. Maintaining rails
in a stable release for at least 5 years is quite hard already, if we
lag behind like this it will become unpractical for us to do it.
- As a result of rails transition we may identify packages to be
removed. Praveen and Utkarsh already mentioned in the past that we could
remove some packages previously needed by Gitlab. That would reduce our
maintenance effort.
- Usual cleanup (bugs, check for newer upstream releases, etc.).
So yes, we do have work to do before Trixie release!
And then comes the question about where and when. Let's start with the
"when", Daniel offered to contact the release team to see if we can do
it in January without disrupting any freeze period too much, so far, it
seems that we do not have a final date for the freeze. Now about the
"where", I believe we will not be able to do it in Japan as we initially
planned since we do not have a good plan until now, the other option is
Kerala (India) as offered by Abhjjith (where accommodation and food
could be covered with DebConf money they still have). Would everyone
(apart from people from Kerala :) be willing to travel to Kerala? Daniel
mentioned he could check with one of his customers to host something in
Germany, but it is not guaranteed. Also not sure if Cedric would be
willing/able to host us again.
It would be great to get an input from other team members about the
sprint. I believe it would really help us to have a better Ruby
ecosystem in Trixie.
Please, reply here with your thoughts. Tell us if you are
interested/able to attend, where and when would be better for you.
TIA!
Lucas Kanashiro.

Quack,
Thanks Kanashiro-kun for adding me in. A meeting in Japan would be
really great.

And well, we did not get any answer yet from Hideki. I was informally
chatting with Cedric and we were thinking about talking to Duck (who
lives in Japan) to see if he could help with the organization of the
sprint there. I'm explicitly CCing Duck to see if he has any feedback
on that.
Depending on the dates I could lend a hand. I just want to be clear I
have never organized such meetings and I have no knowledge of possible
venues at the moment. Maybe the folks from the local Debian group
(Debian Benkyoukai) could help but I've not seen them since the start
of the pandemic; I could try to contact them though.
Regards.
