For the purpose of this study it doesn't matter whether you calibrate the ratings or not. They are all relative and they are linear (to calibrate, just add or subtract a constant from each rating.) The study was designed to show the value of a doubling. The study shows that with 11 doublings you gain approximately 1700 ELO points.
