David, Mine is a smaller boat (27 ft).
With the 6:1 I can trim the main in any wind (at least, any wind I care to sail in). I changed it from the original 4:1, because of that very reason - in a blow I had problems pulling the main in, but even worse - when trying to release it a bit (you need to pull a bit on the sheet for the can cleat to release).
