Chuck, I have a different boat, but I faced a similar dilemma a few years ago. On my boat the arrangement was a 4:1 at the traveller and the sheet went along the boom to the mast and back to a winch.
I changed it to a 3:1/6:1 arrangement with control only at the traveller. This allows for a quick sheeting in of the main (e.g. during a gybe) using the 3:1 arrangement, and fine tuning and great purchase using the 6:1. As an added bonus, I freed a clutch on the cabin top (I re-used it for the vang). I used a special double block, double clam cleat block from Garhauer. You can see it here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2dtg10w31yog3j6/20140830_160646.jpg?dl=0 To use 3:1, you pull on both ends of the sheet, to use 6:1 – either one. If you are good at it, you can make it into a continuous loop by splicing the ends. Otherwise, you have to adjust them every so often. The unfortunate thing is that Garhauer does not list that block on their website, but a quick call to Guido will solve that issue. My mainsheet has the original setup, going from 3:1 at the traveler, along the boom to block at mast collar, and back through a stopper to a winch. I've seen pics of different configurations, the enviable upgrade seems where the mainsheet stays at the traveler in the cockpit, and has a two-speed setup with camcleats. With my wife and I usually doing the sailing, the purchase and size would need to be significant enough to enable either of us to pull the main in under a blow, without a winch and avoiding cardiac issues. So any of you 37/40 owners have experience and suggestions with mainsheet configurations to offer before I help some supply house achieve their sales quota this month? Thanking anyone in advance!
