Hey David,
Leverage. The 34/36 has the traveller located on the cabintop at about 45% E
while the 37/40 traveller position is further back on the bridge deck, probably
at 75% or 80% E so it's mainsheet has much more leverage on the sail.

On my 34R, I located the traveller just in front of the pedestal at about 90%
or 95% E and found 6:1 was not enough to enable me to release the cam cleat
when she was loaded up, unless I put my foot against it. This became critical
when trying to round the windward mark in a race and crew struggled with it. I
added a 4:1 fine tune and it works great. One huge disadvantage is cockpit
spaghetti. The end boom 6:1 mainsheet requires about 80 ft of line and the
fine tune adds another bit of line that winds up on the floor. Because of the
spaghetti, I changed my genoa sheets to red to help the crew during a tack,
avoid standing on the line during the release. Sucks when the leech of the
genoa gets pinned onto the spreader tip because someone is standing or sitting
on the jib sheet.

I reduced the purchase to 5:1 and added a pendant to the traveller block, but I
could add pendants to the boom mounted blocks to reduce the length of the
tackle and shorten the mainsheet. Need to play with that on the water next
year.
