Seem like I remember an old saying, “old paint that doesn’t want to come off is
your best primer”

I did mine in 2018, did what you said as far as sanding and such, and gave it a
good coat rolled and tipped. Well, not exactly. I was rolling it on with a 4”
roller, and it was taking too long, as far as the paint set-up time, so I went
up to Sam’s Club and bought a six pack of condiment dispensers, like large
catsup squirters, and dribbled the paint on and brushed it out, worked great.
You have to look close to see any brush marks, if any. If I was worried about
it, and I guess I am not, I would wet sand and buff them out, but there is only
a short area where you can even see that close. I was going to use the PPG
Concept I had used in the past but the paint salesman/owner talked me into
Advanced Industrial Coatings (Sherwin Williams) acrylic enamel, two part. Told
me it was way better and cheaper than Concept,. Well, that was not even close
to being true. I should have either used Concept, or Awlgrip. I’ll never
listen to that SOB again. The paint might be expensive, but it doesn’t matter,
it is the most important part of the job. B/C you don’t want to be doing this
again.

Hi Folks I am hoping to get some advise on repainting the mast on DejaVu and
specifically what type of paint to use?

DejaVu is a 1990 C&C 34/36+. The mast came painted from the factory and over
the years its gotten more than a few scuffs. With the mast down (in
preparation of splashing at Lake Lanier) I want to put a top coat of paint on
it before re-rigging the boat. Not sure if the original paint is an enamel or
an epoxy paint?

My plan is to spend a day prepping the mast taping off areas and hand sanding
with 220 grit to allow for better adhesion on the top coat. Following this
will be a tack cloth with mineral spirits to have the surface clean and ready.

Questions are what paint would be best? Will i have to first reprime the mast
or would there be a paint choice that would act both as prime & top coat? How
can I find out if the mast was enamel or epoxy paint?

Thank You and appreciate advise ahead of this project.
