I can't find the post from someone who said it's easy to go cruising on less than 2K a month. That's true. Here's my Quicken report for 2013:

(I'll probably delete that link in a few days.)

It's interesting to note that I spend more on Tequila and Tobacco than on groceries. I suppose that's not much of a surprise. I do like to cook, and have the galley for it, and so don't spend a lot of money eating out. And when I do, I actually prefer cheap tacos and local fare, or pick up slow roasted chicken or ribs and take it back to the boat.

Note that I exceeded my budget last year, but I got lazy and spent a lot of time in marinas. It wasn't just lazy, though, I was really worried about my anchor chain, which was so rusty after dragging it through the sand for four years that it left a couple of cups of rust on the foredeck every time I dropped the hook. I didn't feel safe leaving the boat unattended at anchor. <http://www.wbryant.com/temp/oldchain.jpg> The pic doesn't really show the bad part, which is buried halfway through the pile.

Then, last week, some rich guy who's getting ready to cross the Pacific had all new chain brought down, and gave me his old stuff, which was only used for one season, for a buck a foot:
