Option A: Make your own: Harbor Freight and other discount tool suppliers sell
bearing pullers. The puller is cheap but you need a piece behind the bearing
called a bearing separater and a 6" pipe nipple cut in half to clamp around the
shaft to apply pressure to the bearing properly. You might need $70 before
you're done.

Option B: Get a price from a local engine mechanic to change the cutless
bearing you provide. If you remove the fairing around the strut to remove the
set screws and remove the prop and provide the new bearing, he already has all
the tools and might do it for a 30 pack? Worth a try. A friend hired a pro to
do it for $100 rather than screw with it himself and he felt it was worth not
having to chase down the right tool. I think you could get a better price if
you ask a mechanic working in the yard already.

Josh,

I'm trying to avoid the step of "removing the shaft". Internet wisdom also says
you can make your own tool, but I don't know if I can find something sized
properly to push out the old one. If the yard has the tool I may pay them to do
it.

Internet wisdom says that if you don't mind removing the shaft, a hack saw
threaded up the cutlass will remove it and a length of all thread and some
washers will install it. Let us know what works.

Good luck,

For 50 I would buy it. The one I saw was 400! Can you point me in the right
direction?

Nope, but if you end up buying one... I remember seeing one where you didn't
have to remove the shaft. I think it ran about $50.

All,

Does anyone in the Annapolis area have a cutlass bearing removal tool for a 1
inch shaft that I could borrow?

Thanks!
