More expensive compasses tend to use a mineral oil for greater dampening.

The risk of getting a strong alternating magnetic field close to anything
that is magnetized is that you could degauss it.
But the field has to be strong and close so I suspect that 2M should be
fine.

We had a cover and base chromed before a Bermuda trip on a C&C 44 and had
to degauss that because it was having a significant effect on the compass.
BTW if you need to use a degausser (strong AC electromagnet) you have to
slowly approach and move away from the object or you may end up with a
stronger magnetic field than you started with.
