I've been without for 20 years on the Chesapeake. I do have a rather good sized bronze one inside, though. A plastic bag is going to be a problem whatever you have.

The reason I put it on was because before it was there, we sucked up a plastic bag while motoring which caused the engine overheat and the alarm to sound....of course, at the time, we didn't know what was causing the engine to overheat. Not everyone will agree on these strainers, but I won't be without one. Cleaning it in the Fall or scrapping it off and gluing a new one on is far less problematic than sucking up a plastic bag or whatever. Let's see what the list says. This is particularly true when I am getting ready to leave the dock. On my 30MKII, the engine intake is completely "naked", i.e., no protection against drawing in a sea nettle, or any kind of debris. There's simply a small orifice directly into the marelon seacock. It's not unusual to find debris in the onboard strainer. I am considering installing a bronze strainer to mitigate the risk. I would appreciate any feedback on what, if anything, others have done to address this problem. Thanks, Pete W.
