And a crew overboard would likely be even more difficult to spot. I almost always wear an inflatable harness, and when I wear one, so does almost every other person who comes on the boat. I don't insist on it but I do recommend it. A friend of mine has lost 2 life rings overboard so far, and couldn't find either one.

I actually have one on my boat, although no one uses it. They all like the Lewmar and Harken handles better. If we dropped a floating handle over the side while racing, I'm not going back for it, so it is as good as gone. Even while cruising, I doubt that you could find/recover one. This Sunday my wife got up and her cockpit cushion fell over the side. It's off-white and 18"x36". We noticed it within minutes, but spent twenty minutes coaming the river for it. It was nearly impossible to see, even though it floats fairly high in the water. It was blowing 15-20 kts, so we had some white caps, which added to our difficulty. Just when I was about to give up, we found it. I hated to think of the $ to buy another one. This one was already a replacement for the previous one that went overboard.
