Winch handles without locking cams should be labelled - "Caution, this
handle is headed for the bottom of the bay - It's only a matter of time".

Saturday it went into 400 ft of water. When a loop from a reef line plucked
it off the cabintop main winch and gracefully flipped it into the water was
almost like slow motion - nothing you can do about it, but watch.

Oh well, it was destined for the bottom on the day it was made, now I get to
buy one with a locking cam.

Alera, 1990 37+/40 Wing Keel here.

This is our 2nd year with Alera, so we are still in the Honeymoon stage.  We
are cruisers, so I won't comment on the race capability of the 47+/40.  But,
she sure sails like a thoroughbred.  Alera was a great lakes boat with less
than 500 hrs on her engine, a real cream puff.  Treated well, and never
sailed too hard or raced as far as I know.  I decided on the model and then
looked at a bunch before getting Alera.  I felt it was a perfect
configuration for my wife and I and I am convinced I was absolutely correct
in that.

I'll echo what Edd said about the cockpit...we are still getting used to it
due to it being so relatively shallow, especially compared to our 35 MK 1.
We added rail seats in the corners of the aft pulpit which provides
additional spots for sitting and helped.  Cushions and pillows also help.
Of course, the aft stateroom make it a small price to pay.

Coming up from a 35 MK1 to the 37+ was a little daunting at first, but now
we fell right at home and the two of us (both in our 60's) have no trouble
with her.  On extended cruises we seems to like being on board more an more
as the trip progresses.

I installed Kato Davits and we carry a 9' Avon with a 9.9 taitsu which seems
to balance the anchor, windlass, chain combo nicely. Go figure.

Gert Tiel did our survey and since she had spent most of her life at Niagara
on the Lake (C&C home port) I had a high comfort level in his ability to
spot issues, though we bought her on the hard in the winter, so locating
moisture was not really possible.  But no issues whatsoever.  I did hear of
a 37+ here in Seattle recently that had delamination issues, though I do not
know if it was with the balsa core deck or kevlar hull.  But that might be a
deal killer for anyone.  No deck/hull joint issues on Alera or on any other
37+ that I know of.

As far as I am concerned, Alera is the perfect boat, at least it is for us.
We were on her today, just for a few minutes, and my wife and I both
remarked how great she is and how much we love her..

not have a "drip-less" coupling, only the factory  original stuffing box and

The gear shift lever on my 32 is sloppy as all hell. This is my second
season with the boat and it's been this way since I've gotten it and I'm
wondering if it can be tightened or something? There is no obvious method to
do so.
By sloppy I mean, play, there is loads of play both up and down in the
direction of shifting as well as fore and aft.

Sounds as though you have worn bushings in the pedestal. Suggest simply
removing the compass assembly and digging down until you find the cause.
There is no magic cure.

Just be careful taking things apart. Small screws have a great fondness for
cockpit drains.

BTW, with all this talk of engine control cables: with my recent
pedestal/engine control replacement, I had ordered a Teleflex CCX64306
transmission control cable (six feet long), then found that it actually
needed to be a seven-footer; so I have the six-footer available to anyone on
the list who might need one.  This is the Teleflex TFXTREME line of
heavy-duty, super flexible control cables; the jacket is black, as opposed
to the red most of have on our boats as original equipment.  The threaded
fittings on the ends are 5/16-24.

The cables sell for over $100; first offer of $50 plus shipping gets the
prize?   :^)
