Jake,

With much respect, it's a choice with respect to floating winch handle
recovery. I mainly beercan race these days. If it went overboard while
racing, I'd more than likely execute my winch handle overboard procedure,
i.e. throw the floating cushion, drop sail if necessary and see how good my
man overboard skills are.
But if I were in some sort of epic race, I would probably let the handle
sleep with the floating fishes.
