I'd go for the best value that you can get now.My biggest regret about sailing is that I waited too long to buy my first boat. When I jumped in, I bought a Venture 21 from a friend, three years later a San Juan 24 which was a nice boat with full standing headroom, if you're 5ft 4in, and finally a C&C 30.The 30 is the first boat of adult size with standing headroom for normal sized folks. It has an oven, but my wife has no intention of using it! It was a great family decision and all the kids still love sailing. And in my case, the A4 was replaced with a 3cyl Universal diesel and that's not too bad for quiet operation. Friends with the small yanmars seem more shakey, but I think it's a matter of how many cylinders; the more the quieter. The 30 is best in 12-15kts IMHO and can sail its number for racing. However, it moves well in light air, just harder to race its number. I use a 165% genny which really aids light air performance. The performance is worth the race penalty since I live in the midwest and we have either light air or tornadoes.RonWild CheriSTL
