All, thanks for info.  I am going to make sure there is a fuse, but the PO did 
a prettgy good job whenever he upgraded, so I think there will be one.  Then I 
will test with power off and switch on.  Thanks.

I agree you want it straight to the battery and also maybe parallel to the 
switch…but straight to the battery will turn it on when the float switch in the 
bilge activates it.  Make sure to put an inline fuse in series with the power 
line (+) at the battery terminal

Any guidance on following?  Our (new for us) 1980 cc32 has a lovet bilge pump. 
But I believe it is wired so that it goes on automatically only  if the pump 
switch on the bulkhead is switched to ON,  But this means, the power to that 
switch has to be on, even when we are not on the boat. I am reluctant to leave 
that switch on when we are not on board because that means power would be on, 
also.  Our previous boat had a small bilge pump wired directly to the battery, 
so when water hit a certain level, pump would go on. Any thoughts? thanks Dan Mc
