>>One day, we're all going to face the same problem... I know I will. Colin << Calypso's co-owner and I went through this late 2011. We had completed a major goal (Circumnavigate Vancouver Isl.) and a smaller, less costly boat was being advocated strongly by spouses. We were facing costly paint, wet core repairs, and sail upgrades that are/will be needed. After some inquires and 40+ year old used boat market reality checks the emotional attachment to this particular C&C 43 over came our business and rational decisions. Now we are both knee deep in epoxy, balsa and fiberglass projects. We have plans for some 2013 PNW racing and cruising. The decision to make the DIY repairs and paint what we can complete each winter (under a cover, in the water) to preserve/improve the boat's condition has worked out OK. The co-owner and I were relieved not to be attempting to sell a boat that we had associated a much higher emotional value to than the used boat market would support. On New Years Day 2014 we will have another "ownership meeting" and chart out the next 12 to 18 months. Locally, there is an older gentleman who has a nice-but-needs-TLC Tartan 34. When he said he no longer uses it and slip fees are becoming expensive, I suggested he could get $18-20K if he sold it. He said "I saw one on Yachtworld for $47k before the economy went in a hole, and I'm not giving the boat away." Personally, I have what I think is a really nice C&C 25 mk1 that needs someone to love it. New bottom job. Updated Kenyon spar with new standing rigging. Garhauer rigid vang and line adjustable cars. $8k in recent/new sails - including 2 new mains (1 Dacron for cruising and 1 carbon for racing), a Kevlar 155 for racing, a Dacron 155, a lapper, and a storm jib that has only been flown about 6 times. Electric head. Custom cabinets for storage and a more usable galley. Updated upholstery and new cushions. I even have a steel cradle for anyone who needs it. All-in-all a nice boat for which I may get $5500 in today's market. Imagine my surprise a couple of weeks ago when someone on the list posted about a 25 at their club thaqt is for sale for Cdn$13,900. A boat is worth exactly what the potential buyer is willing to spend - which is, unfortunately, probably less than you have invested in it both financially and emotionally. If you're a buyer, it's a great market. If you're a seller, not so much. And fairly often you see boat listings from sellers who didn't get the memo about the price deflation. So last night I'm having dinner at the club and on the bulletin board is an ad for a Mirage 24 (a C&C design). Looks like nice boat with decent upgrades. Ad doesn't specify the year, but let's assume mid-70's. Asking price.... Wait for it..... $25,000! Holy cow!! I can buy half a dozen Mirage 24's for that price and still have money left over.... This must be one special boat... Cheers Colin _______________________________________________ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album http://www.cncphotoalbum.com CnC-List@cnc-list.com
