I replaced Calypso's with the SS wire in 2011. I went with the wire
(un-coated) for the classic look, abrasion resistance, UV resistance, and to
meet the racing safety requirements (vinyl coated seems to be banned by ISAF
and others).

If I was looking for the last bit of performance (less weight) I would have
gone the high tech line route.

Buying new life lines was easy as I removed the old (well labeled) and took
them into Fisheries Supply, Seattle as patterns for a new set. The cost was
reasonable as measured against the raw material costs and my labor rate to F
around time in a once every 10 years DIY project.

I was able to re-use most of the expensive hardware (turnbuckles etc.) and the
installation was quick and easy.

Subject: Stus-List SS wire or line for lifelines

I am considering replacing my 17 year old lifelines (wire with white plastic
cover) this year.

I like the idea of bare SS wire (long lifetime) although the hassle of the
fittings, swaging, etc. is not appealing.

OTOH, high tech line is begining to be used which eliminates the fittings,
swaging, etc. but it likely has a limited life exposed to the
North Carolina sun every day.

Opinions and especially experience from the list would be appreciated.

TIA,
